Dialogue for Reconciliation, Healing, Peace and Stability in East Africa

In response to the announcement by the Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed to accept the terms of a peace agreement with Eritrea signed in 2000, the Eritrea’s president Isaias Afwerki announced that he is sending a delegation to Ethiopia for peace talks.

The East African Policy Research Institute (EAPRI) appreciates and fully supports this positive step towards dialogue for reconciliation and healing between brothers and sisters across the border longing to reconnect. We are optimist that this initiative will significantly improve peace and stability in the region.

Dialogue for justice, reconciliation, healing and peace are the only antidotes to impunity - the condition where powerful individuals and institutions act as they wish including waging useless and endless wars. Impunity surface where there is a deficit of democratic structures to ensure transparency, accountability, fairness, and impartiality. Most often war crimes, violation of human rights and repressions results from perceptions of impunity. Justice, peace, reconciliation and healing, on the other hand, flourish where democratic values prevail and constrain arbitrariness and abuse of power.

EAPRI commends the steps taken by the two nations. But we earnestly believe that only democratic transition provide lasting and sustainable solution for the complex challenges of impunity, insecurity, instability and poverty in the East African region. Hereof, our institute is collaborating with national governments, regional institutions and international communities to contribute towards sustainable democratic transition in the region.

With Regards,

The East African Policy Research Institute (EAPRI)
